A Deep Dive Into The Suunto Ambit3 Run
Suunto Ambit3 Run is a high specification GPS performance watch dedicated to the needs of competitive runners. Reviewed by Tristan Haskins
Update > In October 2016 Suunto released their new Suunto Spartan Sport GPS multisport watch. If you want the latest and greatest offering from Suunto, then please check the review of the Spartan Sport here.
Please note. I still hold this Ambit3 Run in very high esteem and would recommend it to anyone looking for a good GPS runners watch with Bluetooth connection to iOs & Android smartphone.
Apart from the full colour touchscreen of the Spartan Sport there are several features that this Ambit 3 Run has that appear to be missing from the Spartan eg. no Suunto APPS support, running cadence and track back … however, there are loads of new features like improved rest and recovery analysis, recovery time view on watch post training, 80 plus pre-installed sports modes and personal bests ….

Wearable Tech Running Fans
If you’re in to wearable technology then Android users may want to consider the Polar M600, powered by Android Wear or for users of iPhone the Apple Watch 2 Nike+. Both these watches feature built-in GPS, are swim proof, have wrist based heart rate and can store music on their internal memory for playback via Bluetooth headphones.
Polar M600 Android Wear connected smartwatch, supports Strava application
Apple Watch Nike+ iPhone connected smartwatch comes with Nike+ Run Club pre-installed
Next Model UP
The model up from this one is the Suunto Ambit3 Peak or the newer Suunto Spartan Sport or Spartan Ultra.
The Ambit 3 Peak adds navigation support, weather alerts and barometric pressure sensor for more accurate altitude feedback.
The Spartan range replaced the Ambit 3 range in October 2016 and is improving all the time with frequent firmware updates
Available in Lime, White or Black. The Suunto Ambit3 Run has the perfect feature set for RUNNERS. From a high sensitivity GPS sensor giving accurate pace, speed and distance to a built in accelerometer giving access to your leg cadence (strides per minute). All the new Ambit3’s can connect to compatible smartphone giving access to incoming call alert, message alerts and more.
For the technically minded runner, as well as leg cadence support, there is heart rate monitoring from the optional HRM belt, intervals, quick recovery and sleep tests (with HR sensor), recovery timer and running performance indicator (letting you know if/when you speed versus effort efficiency is improving as you get fitter/stronger).
Note, we have ticked YES for this watch with regard to Virtual Partner. Although not included in the STANDARD features the user has the ability to install the relevant APP in to the Ambit3. For Virtual Partner download the Ghost Runner APP. It’s not exactly the same but it basically allows you to run a predetermined distance in a target time.
