4 Ways to Stay Healthy When Stuck Indoors

The COVID19 outbreak has seen most of us spending more time indoors than usual. Whether you’re currently working from home, or have been furloughed from your workplace because it’s not essential, going from being in the office or workplace every day to spending all day cooped up in your house is a big adjustment. And while it’s certainly the best thing to do to stay healthy and safe from the virus, there’s no denying that being stuck at home can affect your mental and physical health in many other ways. The first thing to do is realize that you’re safe at home – shifting your mindset can make it easier to deal with. Here are some other things that you can do to stay healthy and well while in lockdown.

Keep It Clean

Since you’re at home all the time, things are going to get messier faster than usual – so make sure that you get into a good routine in terms of household chores and clean up as you go, so you don’t end up getting overwhelmed. If you’re self-isolating with your family, give everybody their own jobs to do. Keeping things clean and tidy isn’t just important for your health; it’ll also help you fight the virus. If you need to go out to get medical supplies or groceries, keeping your home clean will help stop the spread of the virus if you are exposed when outdoors. Along with practicing good hand hygiene, you should also regularly disinfect any high-touch surfaces in your home like door handles, light switches, and faucets.

Stay Active

The gym might be closed to the public now but the good news is that this doesn’t have to stop you from being active. As long as you stay at least six feet away from others, there’s nothing wrong with going out for a brisk walk, a run, or a cycle around your neighborhood or a local park. If you prefer to exercise indoors, check out YouTube for various free workout videos that you can follow. Bodyweight exercises like push-ups, pull-ups, sit-ups, and squats are great if you’re looking to build muscle but don’t have any weights at home. And don’t forget that if you have a games console like an Xbox with Kinect, Nintendo Wii, or PSVR there are many fantastic games that are great exercise too.

Stick to Your Sleep Schedule

If you’re at home with no work to do because your employer is temporarily closed due to the outbreak, you might be tempted to stay up a little later than usual and enjoy a lie-in in the mornings. But while sleeping and waking a little later is fine, be careful not to let your sleeping pattern veer too far off course. Not only can this be damaging to your mental and physical health, but you will also have a harder time getting back to normal once you’re able to go back to work. Why not use this free time you suddenly have to improve your bedroom? A new mattress could be just what you need to sleep easier at night and wake up feeling rested and refreshed. Eat Healthily

There’s nothing like being stuck at home to tempt you into eating more snacks and drinking more wine than usual, but don’t overdo it. With restaurants closing down, there’s never been a better time to make your own healthy home-cooked food. And if you’re bored, why not try some online cooking tutorials and learn how to cook dishes that you’ve always wanted to try?
